Antique Empire Fire-gilt mantel clock. "Psyche in front of the mirror". Height: 54 CM, 21.2 INCH Width: 34 CM, 13.4 INCH Depth: 15 CM, 5.9 INCH. Psyche looks at herself in a mirror, holding a small vase in her hand.
It is a modification of the beauty ointment that Psyche brought in the Underworld from Persephone, on behalf of Venus. The scene was particularly well-known through the story's of Jean de La Fontaine (1669) and the painting by Angelika Kaufmann, in which Psyche holds the same vase. The moment Psyche opens the bottle, a vapor comes out that makes her ugly (this has never been portrayed in art) But Cupid can undo it and comfort the confused Psyche.
The watch is of exceptionally good quality and completely original. The gilding is very well preserved. The watch has an enamel dial signed "Girmingau a Paris" with Roman hour numerals, the beautiful Breguet hands are gilded. The Paris movement has a ½ hour strike.
Exceptionally rare clock with date. The watch runs for 8 days with thread suspension of the pendulum. Pictured in the book by E.
Niehüser: Die französische Bronzeuhr pages 118 & 139. Please also note our other Empire mantel clocks.
